Twitchell Short Dress: Sizing the Elastic Top
Elastic-top dresses get sized wrong in both directions. Some people size down, reasoning the stretch will cope; some size up, fearing the elastic will squeeze. On the Twitchell — a tiered short dress in red with a ruched elastic neckline — both instincts miss how the dress actually works. This is the sizing logic, from the top down.
What the elastic is doing
The neckline is ruched with elastic: fabric gathered onto an elastic channel that stretches to let you in and recovers to hold. Its job is grip, not compression — it needs only enough tension to keep the neckline in place. Inside your correct size, you should barely register it. If the elastic is the first thing you feel, the dress is too small; the stretch exists for getting dressed, not for daily wear.
What the tiers are doing
Below the neckline, the tiered skirt hangs free — gathered horizontal sections that fit every body in a size exactly the same way, because they touch none of them. This is why bust is the only measurement that matters on the Twitchell: the neckline region is the entire fitted zone, and everything below it is architecture, not fit.
The between-sizes answer
The Twitchell runs XS to XL, covering US 0 through 18. Land between two sizes and take the larger: the elastic will still grip — that is its one talent — while the tiers simply hang with a touch more ease. The smaller size buys you nothing but a tighter neckline.
The parts that are not about size
A front button placket opens the neckline when you want it open — useful for air, and it means the elastic never has to stretch over styled hair. The raglan sleeves are cut short, seamed to the neckline rather than the shoulder point, so they fit consistently across the size run. And there are side pockets in the tiers, invisible and load-bearing.
