Hughson Shirt Dress: One Piece, Three Jobs
A shirt dress is the multitool of a warm-weather closet, and the Hughson is ours: an oversized midi with a full front button placket, cut in block-printed cotton and silk. One garment, at least three distinct jobs. Here is how to run each one.
Job one: buttoned up, worn as the dress
Closed, the Hughson is a composed midi. The gathered back yoke gives the oversized body its intentional fall — gathering at the yoke is what separates an oversized cut from a shapeless one — and the chest patch pockets with button flaps read crisp and utilitarian, like the shirt the dress descends from. This is the version for work-adjacent days, appointments, and any plan where put-together matters.
Job two: cuffed and casual
The three-quarter sleeves taper to a buttoned cuff, which means they roll and stay rolled — push them past the elbow, button the cuff to hold the fold if you like, and the whole register drops a notch. Open a button or two at the collar. Same dress, Saturday version, and the transition takes ten seconds in a parking lot.
Job three: open, as the layer
Because the placket opens the whole way down, the Hughson also works unbuttoned — a light, block-printed layer over a tank dress or a swimsuit, sleeves cuffed, moving like a duster. Oversized cuts layer well precisely because of the room; this is the job that makes the dress earn its keep on days you were not planning to wear a dress at all.

Two chest patch pockets with button flaps — secure enough for a card or a lip balm — plus pockets at the sides for the phone and keys. Four pockets on one dress is a small logistics department. Use it.
Fabric and fit notes
Cotton and silk, block printed, lined in cotton, made in India — the silk gives the oversized volume its drape so it falls instead of standing away. It runs XS to XL, US 0 through 18, and since the cut is deliberately oversized, size by your usual bust measurement and let the cut supply the room; sizing down to fight the volume defeats the yoke's whole design.
