Most of our long dresses fit by forgiveness — elastic, smocking, ties, tiers. The Brannan does not. It is the tailored one: an ankle-length blue linen dress shaped by waist darts and closed with a concealed zipper, which makes it the most fitted maxi we cut and the one where your size genuinely matters. Read this before you order it.
What waist darts change
Darts are folds sewn into the fabric to shape it toward the body — the technique behind tailored shirts and structured dresses. On the Brannan they give the waist definition without making the dress tight: the description's own phrase is shape without being fitted, and that is the honest middle it occupies. The silhouette follows you; it does not grip you. But unlike an elastic-topped dress, the shape is sewn in at one size, which is why the sizing section below is longer than usual.
The zipper tells you how it fits
The Brannan closes with a concealed zipper at the back. A zip entry means the dress is cut close enough that it does not simply pull over your head — a structural fact that confirms this is tailored territory. The upside is a clean, uninterrupted front and a fit that looks intentional in a way pull-on cuts cannot. The zip is hidden, so the back stays as clean as the front.
Sizing it properly
The run is XS to XL, US 0 through 18. Because the darts define a waist, measure three points — bust, waist, hip — not just the bust, and fit to the largest of the three. If you sit between sizes, take the larger: darted shaping flatters most when it skims, and a size up on the Brannan still shows its waist. The wide short sleeves are cut roomy across all sizes, so arms never decide the size.
The linen half of the story
The fabric is cotton and linen, hand loomed, lined in cotton, made in India. Linen brings the dry, textured hand and the breathability that lets an ankle-length dress work in heat; the hand-loomed weave gives the blue a surface flat mill cloth does not have. Side pockets are set into the seams — tailoring here does not cost practicality.
